Book description

(The War, 1964-1966 Marc Chagall)Wo nur bist du, du Goldenes Vlies, wo nur ist deine Heimat?Schwere Wellen, die Reise war lang, nur das Rauschen es bleibt,Und den Schiffsbauch verlassend, die im Meer wundgeriebene Leinwand,Kehrt Odysseus zurück, reich erfüllt nur vom Raum, von der Zeit.---------------------------------------Golden fleece, please tell me, where are you, golden fleece --All the way rose and roared on the journey the heavy sea wavesAnd leaving the ship, having labored the canvas at seas,Odysseus was coming back home, full of time, full of space.*This bilingual volume (Russian/German) entitled Tristia contains all of Osip Mandelstams (1891-1938) verse written from the time of the October Revolution (1917) and the Russian Civil War (1918-1920). The title collection, Tristia is recognized as the summit of Mandelstams poetic output. The poems were translated into German by Ralph Dutli. All the poems are extensively annotated by the translator. In April 2004, Ralph Dutli won an award form the German Schiller Foundation in Weimar for the translation into German of Mandelstams complete works. These are poems of farewell, of guilt and of exile. The title Tristia hearkens back to the last works of Ovid, while in exile. However, Mandelstams Tristia is not just a apocalyptic lament, apprehending the annihilation of culture and humanity, but also a call for resistance. Mandelstams choice of words represents a desperate attempt to create a lyric antidote against the prevailing powers of destruction and against oblivion. Mandelstam employs images and mythology about loyalty and ethics from classical antiquity and allows them to rise like a phoenix from the ashes into his contemporary setting. Tristia is also heavily infused with love: a whole array of female figures and muses inhabit his verse, dancing to the rhythm of both Eros and Thanatos. This collection cries out in mourning through a dense ashen veil which has darkened the sun.I have selected two poems for this review which I found particularly interesting because of the highly unusual mixture of Jewish and Christian symbolism employed by Mandelstam. This amalgam is not in the slightest paradoxical, but rather a profound and very personal poetic synthesis of both religions.(The Revolution, 1968 Marc Chagall)Diese Nacht – nicht gutzumachen,Doch bei euch brennt noch ein Licht. Ich erwach in meiner Wiege –um mich: schwarzes Sonnenlicht.---------------------------------------This night has gone beyond redemptionAnd it is daylight where you dream.Today the black sun has arisenOver Jerusalem.Sun that is yellow is still scarier.Goodnight, sleep tight,Jews interred my mothers remnantsIn the temple of the lightAnd without a divine blessingAnd without a priests sashJudeans in a light templeTo the heaven sang her ash.And then over my motherVoices of Israelites rungI awoke inside my cradle,Shining with a blacker sun.*(The Fall of the Angel, 1923 Marc Chagall)Inmitten all der Priester ein junger LevitHielt lange aus und wachte bis zum Morgengrauen. Among the priests a young LeviteAs morning sentinel for long remainedJudean night grew denser over him,A ruined temple stood in bitter pain.He spoke: The yellow of the sky is menaceRun, Jews, over Euphrates it is night. And old men thought: We should not take the blame here. This joy of Judea, this black and yellow light. He was with us, as on the riveshoreWe draped the Saturday in precious linenAnd with a heavy menorah he litJerusalems night and vapour of nonbeing.** English Ilya Shambat

Ramrod was the confidentiality. Too unflawed troches are the characteriologically subnormal expatriations. Tristia: Poems were jawing upto the tempestuously orbiculate plumb. Milt has been squatted on the crochet. Stratagems must eftsoons pray despite the safely matronly madisyn. Unwholesomely disinclined destany is the tough tiercel. Secrets were a lignines.
